Instructions
The advice to wrap mattresses applies to every mattress on which a baby sleeps (except a BabeSafe® mattress) and includes: mattresses of other children; adults’ mattresses; and all mattresses made of or containing natural products such as sheepskins, goatskins, kapok, tree bark, coconut fibre, etc.

The most convenient way to wrap a baby’s mattress for crib death prevention is by means of a BabeSafe® mattress slip-cover. These covers are manufactured in six sizes and are available at babycare retail outlets throughout New Zealand and by mail order in some other countries.  You may order here, at Baby's Sake.com.

BabeSafe covers are made of polyethylene (polythene) sheeting. The thickness of the polythene is at least 125 microns.  PVC (polyvinyl chloride) is never used for mattress-wrapping.

Place the mattress into the slip-cover (1), and tuck in the corners at the end of the mattress near the opening of the cover (2) .  Seal the cover
firmly on the underside of the mattress using the strong adhesive strip on the cover (3).  If there is excess plastic, fold the extra width or length over the side/s
or end/s of the mattress so that the cover is smooth on the top of the mattress, and tape the excess plastic onto the cover using strong adhesive tape, taking care not to cover the ventilation hole/s.

Place the covered mattress in the bassinet or crib. The ventilation hole/s must be on the UNDERSIDE of the mattress (4). The top and the sides of the mattress must be airtight (5).

It is imperative to use the correct bedding on top of a BabeSafe®-wrapped mattress, click here for comprehensive instructions

(a) On top of the wrapped mattress place a 100% pure cotton flannelette blanket plus one fitted cotton** sheet (or two fleecy pure cotton fitted sheets [Note: Do not use a "cotton mattress pad"]) and tuck in securely (6).   Fleecy cotton** looks and feels similar to thin fleece, ask your local department store for fleecy cotton sheets.  Make sure it is 100% cotton!

<** If fleecy cotton sheets are hard to find, You can find them on our website at www.babysake.com/SheetsUSA.htm, or you may use 3 layers of 100% cotton fitted sheets as a substitute.  Also one 100% fleecy cotton blanket placed over the mattress and secured, with 1 100% cotton fitted sheet (any thread count is fine) placed tightly on top could work too.  >

(b) Baby lies on this fitted sheet.

(c) On top of your baby, place 100% pure cotton or 100% pure woolen overblanket/s.

(d) Do not use any of the following items in your baby's crib:

  • Sheepskin
  • Sheepfleece underlay
  • Any form of moisture-resistant mattress protector
  • Any underblanket which is not made of pure cotton
  • Any blanket which contains polyester
  • Any bedding item which is quilted/padded/filled
  • Sleeping bag
  • Duvet
  • Acrylic blankets
  • Pillows or cushions

Do not remove the mattress from inside the BabeSafe cover for airing.
Adequate airing is provided by the ventilation hole/s on the underside of
the cover.

BabeSafe mattress covers should be cleaned by wiping with pure soap and water.

Do not use chemical bleaches or sterilants to clean your BabeSafe cover.

Ensure that your baby's sheets are washed at least once a week (preferably using soap, not detergent). Do not use fabric softener in your baby's laundry.

<
If you use the correct bedding, your baby will be perfectly comfortable.  My baby has been sleeping on this cover since he was 4 months old and has slept wonderfully.  (I tuck a few extra cotton sheets under him to give added softness!) - patricia, mother of a very busy toddler!>
