This logo is the property of B A Richardson, Winchester, England. It identifies bedding which complies with the Cot Life 2000 specifications.

The risk of cot death (SIDS, crib death) can be eliminated by ensuring that babies sleep on mattresses known to be free from the elements phosphorus, arsenic and antimony (and using only certain specified bedding). The BabeSafe range of bassinet and cot mattresses complies with this requirement.

All other types of infant mattress should be enclosed in a BabeSafe mattress cover.

BEDDING INSTRUCTIONS FOR A BABESAFE-WRAPPED MATTRESS THESE INSTRUCTIONS MUST BE FOLLOWED EXACTLY

(a) On top of the wrapped mattress place a 100% pure cotton
underblanket* and tuck this in securely.

(b) On top of the underblanket place two crib sheets. (The baby sleeps between these sheets.)

(c) On top of the upper crib sheet place 100% pure woollen or 100% pure cotton overblanket/s.

(d) Do not use any of the following items in your baby's crib:

Sheepskin
Sheepfleece underlay
Any form of moisture-resistant crib mattress protector Any underblanket which is not made of pure cotton Acrylic blanket Any blanket containing polyester Any bedding item which is quilted/padded/filled Sleeping bag Duvet or quilt Pillows or cushions

* Note: This item must not be a so-called "cotton mattress pad".

(e) Do not sleep your baby in any "clothing" item which is in the form of a bag.

INSTRUCTIONS RE BABY'S LAUNDRY:

1. Wash the baby's laundry (bedding, clothing, and cloth nappies/diapers) using powdered soap or soap flakes.

2. Do not use liquid detergent or powdered detergent or "liquid soap" for washing the baby's laundry. (Note that "liquid soap" is actually detergent.)

3. Do not use fabric softener in the baby's laundry.

4. If you use a laundry "soaking" product (e.g. a diaper soak), following
soaking put all soaked items through an entire washing machine cycle using powdered soap/soap flakes and a full rinse.

There has been no reported cot death on a BabeSafe mattress or on any mattress wrapped in accordance with the BabeSafe protocol.

STATISTICAL PROOF:

In 2002 a German environmental medicine practitioner, Dr Hannes
Kapuste, published the statistical results of the New Zealand
mattress-wrapping campaign: "Giftige Gase im Kinderbett" ("Toxic
Gases in Infants' Beds"), Zeitschrift fuer Umweltmedizin (2002,
No. 44).

The "p" factor for the mattress-wrapping intervention was
calculated by Dr Kapuste (in collaboration with the University of
Munich) as being:  p = less than 1.9 x 10(exp minus 22)

It is usual in medical circles to regard a "p" of less than 0.01
as sound proof of a scientific proposition; and if the "p" is
less than 0.001, that is regarded as virtually certain proof.

1.9 x 10(exp minus 22) (the "p" factor for mattress-wrapping) can
be written as:  0.000,000,000,000,000,000,000,19

Put another way, the statistical proof that mattress-wrapping
prevents cot death is one billion billion times the level of
proof which medical researchers generally regard as constituting
certain proof of a scientific proposition.  Not surprisingly,
therefore, Dr Kapuste described the toxic gas theory for cot
death and mattress-wrapping for cot death prevention as having
"overwhelming reliability".
